How to Edit a Guide

You can edit an existing Guide to update its interview structure, tone, audio settings, informed consent, demographics, limits, and other Guide settings.


Changes made on the Guide Edit screen are saved automatically. A Guide must be published before it can accept interviews.


Team members with a Viewer role are not able to edit Guides.


Open a Guide for Editing

  1. Navigate to Guides from the navigation menu.
  2. Locate the Guide you want to edit. Use the SEARCH bar, the sorting options menu, or the Show Archive toggle if needed.
  3. Hover over the More Options icon next to the Guide.
  4. Click Edit.

After selecting Edit, Qualta opens the Guide Edit screen.


Guide Edit Page Overview

The Guide Edit screen contains all settings used to configure a Guide, including its interview structure, tone, audio settings, informed consent, demographics, and limits.

Save Status

Changes made on the Guide Edit screen are saved automatically. The save status indicator is displayed in the upper-right corner of the page.

  • saving indicates that Qualta is currently saving your changes.
  • saved indicates that your changes have been saved successfully.
  • Hover over the save status indicator to view when the Guide was last saved.

Auto-saving does NOT publish your changes.


Section Status Indicators

Each tab on the Guide Edit screen displays a status indicator to help you identify which sections require attention.

  • A red exclamation mark indicates that required information is missing or incomplete.
  • A green checkmark indicates that the section has been configured successfully.
  • A dash icon indicates that the section has not been configured, but configuration is optional.

Only sections with a red exclamation mark require action before a Guide can be published.


Publishing Edited Guides

After making your updates, click PUBLISH to make the Guide Active and available for interviews.


When you edit an Active Guide, Qualta automatically changes its status to Draft. Draft Guides do not accept interviews until they are published.


Guide updates made within 30 minutes of the last update will not be versioned.


Edit Guide Sections

The Sections tab contains the interview content used by your Guide. You can edit existing Sections and add new Sections as needed.


To edit an existing Section:

  1. Click the Sections tab.
  2. Select the Section you want to edit.
  3. Update the Section content as needed.
  4. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Add a Section

To add a new Section:

  1. Click + ADD SECTION.
  2. A new Section is created and automatically selected.
  3. Enter content for the new Section.
  4. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Additional Guide Sections are only available on Pro and Enterprise plans.


A new Section must contain saved content before it is retained. Empty sections are removed automatically when you leave the Guide Edit screen.


Edit Tone Settings

The Tone tab controls the interview tone used by Qualta during interviews.


To edit Tone settings:

  1. Click the Tone tab.
  2. Select the desired Tone option.
  3. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Edit Audio Settings

The Audio tab allows you to select the interviewer voice used during interviews.


To edit Audio settings:

  1. Click the Audio tab.
  2. Select the desired interviewer voice.
  3. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Edit Informed Consent Settings

The Informed Consent tab is used to configure the informed consent presented to interview participants.


Qualta supports two informed consent methods:

  • Builder — Create informed consent using predefined consent sections.
  • Custom — Create a fully custom informed consent document.

To edit Informed Consent settings:

  1. Click the Informed Consent tab.
  2. Select either Builder or Custom.
  3. Update the informed consent settings as needed.
  4. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Qualta adds default consent language to your custom informed consent. To review the complete informed consent presented to participants, open the Informed Consent tab on the Guide Details page after publishing the Guide.


Do not select Anonymize if your static questions collect personally identifiable information.


Edit Demographic Settings

The Demographics tab is used to select the demographic questions that Qualta asks interview participants.


To edit Demographic settings:

  1. Click the Demographics tab.
  2. Select or deselect demographic fields as needed.
  3. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Demographic options can be configured from Team > Demographics in the navigation menu. The fields shown here are the default demographic fields available when creating and editing Guides.


Edit Limit Settings

The Limits tab is used to control the number of interviews that can be completed and the period during which the Guide is available.


To edit Limit settings:

  1. Click the Limits tab.
  2. Update the Interview Limit and Date Range settings as needed.
  3. Wait for the save status indicator to display saved.

Both the Interview Limit and Date Range settings are optional.


Enter 0 in the Interview Limit field if you do not want to apply an interview limit.
